Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Backus- Woodbridge Collection was purchased by the Ohio
Z i s t o r i c a l Society i n s e v e r a l s e c t i o n s . The bulk of t h e m a t e r i a l ,
formerly c a l l e d t h e Woodbridge- Gallaher Collection ( Biggert's
ir1115), was bought from a Woodbridge descendant, Mr. Charles Penrose
of ? Idrietta, Ohio, i n 1935. The James Backus Papers were purchased
from M r . Victor A. P a l s i t s i n 1944; and i n 1952 the Society bought
the " Marietta~ Papers," a collection of Backus- Woodbridge correspondence,
from Edward Eberstadt ( Biggert's Guide, 1951- 52.) The l a t e s t acquisi-tions
i n the collection were made in 1966, when M r . Ernest J. Wesson
of the Midland Rare Book Company ( Mansfield, Ohio) sold the Society
three cash books and one journal dealing with the Woodbridge- Blennerhasset
partnership. These were formerly part of the H. E. Matheny collection of
West Virginians. Andrea Durham processed t h e c o l l e c t i o n i n Sept. 1967.
