HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Warren King Moorehead ( 1866- 1939) was a well- known American archaeologist, concemed
with prehistoric American Indians and with the cantemporary Indian policies of the United Slates
government.
Moorehead was born in Sienna, Italy to William G. Moorehead and Helen King Moorehead on
March 10, 1868. He beame interested in Indians at the age of 12, when he was living in Xenia.
After entering Denison University in 1884, he collected hundreds of specimens from lndian sites
near Granville.
In 1887, Moorehead secured space in the Exhibilion Hall of the Centennial Exposition held in
Cincinnati to celebrate the settlement at Marietta in 1787. I- ie rented three show cases and
exhibited his specimens. As a result of this exhibit, he met Dr. Thomas Wilson of the
Smithsonian Institution, who suggested that Moorehead bring his collection to Washington.
Moorehead joined the Smithsonian as an aide in Wilson's division of anthropology.
