Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Garrett Hayes
Coleman Collection as a gift of Mrs. WiLlialn A. Alexander and Mrs.
Paul H. Shaver of Columbus, Ohio, and Mr- Paul H. Cclemar~ of Mill.
Valley, California, in June 1955. Keith A. Maneese processed the
collection in April 1980,

Transfer: One- half foot of photographs, keys to photographs, stock
certificates, diagrams, blueprints, and other ephemera were trans-ferred
to che audiovisual department in April 1980. One- half foot
of prince6 materials were transferred to the library divi- sion in
April 1980.

Biogra2hical sketch: Garrett Hayes ( George) Coleman was born in
Maryland on July 18, 1876. He lived in Columbus, Ohio from 1909
until his death on March 14, 1955. Coleman began his association
with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1.895 as a fireman. He was
promoted to engineer with the B & 0 in 1899. An engineer's time
book ( box 7/ folder 16), however, indicates Col. eman worked for the
Pennsylvania Railroad system in 1903.
From 1911 until his retirement in 1946 Coleman was a locomotive
inspector for the Interstate Commerce Commission. Known as the
" I. C. C. Shepherd of Iron Horses," Coleman was in charge of I. C. C.
Division 16N, the area bounded by Chillicothe, Columbus, and
Parkersburg and Weirton Junction, West Virginia. Coleman was
responsible for inspecting over 1200 locomotives, and for issuing
" red tags" to engineers.
