B i o g r a p h i c a l s k e t c h : Thomas Corwin was born in Bourbon County,
Kentucky, on J u l y 2 9 , 1794. A t t h e age of f o u r , he and h i s
f a m i l y moved t o L e b a n o n , O h i o , where he was t o l i v e t h e r e s t of
h i s l i f e . Corwin grew u p i n a p o l i t i c a l e n v i r o n m e n t s i n c e h i s
f a t h e r , M a t t h i a s , s e r v e d f o r e l e v e n t e r m s in t h e Ohio House, two
t e r m s a s i t s s p e a k e r .
Thomas Corwin was f i r s t e l e c t e d t o p u b l i c o f f i c e in 1818 a s Warren
County p r o s e c u t o r , in which c a p a c i t y he s e r v e d u n t i l 1828. The
f o l l o w i n g y e a r he was e l e c t e d a s t a t e l e g i s l a t o r and s e r v e d one
term b e f o r e being e l e c t e d t o t h e United S t a t e s C o n g r e s s . During
h i s f i v e t e r m s in Washington he was known f o r h i s d e b a t i n g s k i l l s
w h i c h , by 1840, g a i n e d him a r e p u t a t i o n as a n a t i o n a l Whig P a r t y
spokesman.
In t h a t same y e a r Corwin u n s e a t e d Wilson Shannon t h e Democratic
incumbent f o r g o v e r n o r . His e l e c t i o n was i n l a r g e p a r t due t o
h i s f r e q u e n t stump s p e a k i n g t h r o u g h o u t t h e s t a t e . His a d m i n i s -
t r a t i o n ' s p r o p o s a l s i n c l u d e d e s t a b l i s h i n g a s t a t e bank, r e c h a r t e r -
i n g t h e s a f e s t e x i s t i n g banks w i t h j o i n t l i a b i l i t y f o r d e b t s
of a l l b a n k s , and r e s t r i c t i o n s on t h e i r n o t e c i r c u l a t i o n and
p r o f i t s . The Democrats, however, s t i l l c o n t r o l l e d t h e Ohio
S e n a t e and C o r w i n ' s n r o n n c a l c w p r p d e f n a + - A hankinq s i t u a -
